CEREMONY TO MARK THE BEGINNING OF A R42 MILLION ROAD BETWEEN WILLOWVALE AND IDUTYWA

Eastern Cape Premier Makhenkesi Stofile says the government is committed to the delivery of services and to address peoples needs to make
their lives better irrespective of their views and attitudes towards the government.

Premier Stofile said this at a ceremony to mark the beginning of construction of a R42 million road between Willowvale and
Idutywa.Addressing about 800 people who packed the Willowvale town hall, Premier Stofile said the project was another landmark in
governments efforts to improve peoples lives since the release of Mr. Nelson Mandela and the liberation of the people of this country. He
said central to the governments programme is to reduce the development gap between previously whites only areas and many townships and
rural areas inhabited by essentially black people.

destitute welfare grant beneficiaries. He cited the case of the murder of a welfare official investigating fraud and corruption at
Idutywa. He appealed to the people to work with government to ensure the elimination of crime and corruption. He thanked people of Idutywa
and Willowvale for their patience and understanding ever since government announced its intention to build the road.

the backbone of economic development. He highlighted the construction of a number of roads which include roads between Ladyfrere and Cala,
Mountfrere and Mount Fletcher as well as the Ntafufu Pass (the road between Port St Johns and Lusikisiki).

The 30-kilometre gravel road will be constructed over a period of two years at a cost of R42 million which will be covered in the budget of
the Department of Roads and Public Works over two financial years i.e. 2000/01 2001/02.The tender for the construction of the road was
won by Rumdel/MPM/Simunye Joint Venture, which has already started on the site.Announcing their programme Mr. Stewart Scott of the company
said they will use local resources such as labour and building materials to boost local economic development as outlined in the
stipulations and guidelines of the government.
